Who is Cakey Kate?

I normally do my baking on Fridays, but this week I’ve been away from my kitchen so have no baking to share with you! So I thought I’d take this opportunity to shed some light on Cakey Kate.

I am called Kate, well Katy but my mum has called me cakey Kate for years. I live in the middle of nowhere in the Kentish countryside, and in a break from my studies to become an Architect I am working in a school for a year. This has given me the perfect opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do; bake (lots) and share what I create. I feel incredibly lucky that I have so many things in my life that I enjoy so much, I just don’t know how I’m going to fit them all in. One of my ambitions is to own a cake shop, preferably that I’ve designed myself.

I’ve got a whole load of baking books that I get most of my recipes from. I’ll occasionally think “I really want to make a chocolatey and raspberry cake, oooh with some white chocolate frosting!” and so I’ll find some recipes I can chop and change to make something new and exciting. I try and make things using what I’ve got in the cupboard, I’ve got a big bag of dessicated coconut in there at the moment so you might see that making an appearance soon!

My sister seems to be one of the biggest donors of recipe books, and for Christmas she gave me “The Professional Pastry Chef”, the biggest and most detailed recipe book I’ve ever seen. She has challenged me to open the book at a random page and make whatever is on it. This could be quite interesting, as I haven’t made a huge amount of pastry before, BUT I will give it a go! So, next week, prepare yourselves for my pastry experiment. Wish me luck!
